J.R.R. Tolkien, author of The Lord of The Rings trilogy and The Hobbit, was a master of quotes. While C.S. Lewis was the true master, (I can recite at least fifteen of his quotes from memory), there are many sayings that are derived from Tolkien's words. My personal favorite:
In The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins says this to himself after laughing at the sleeping form of Smaug, the huge dragon who is very much alive. What a profound piece of wisdom! This is, I'm sure, very good information, but it is not the extent of Tolkien's mastery of words.
“All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given us.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Fellowship of The Ring
“Do you wish me a good morning, or mean that it is a good morning whether I want it or not; or that you feel good this morning; or that it is a morning to be good on?”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
“War must be, while we defend our lives against a destroyer who would devour all; but I do not love the bright sword for its sharpness, nor the arrow for its swiftness, nor the warrior for his glory. I love only that which they defend.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Two Towers
“It does not do to leave a live dragon out of your calculations, if you live near him.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Hobbit, or There and Back Again
“In this hour, I do not believe that any darkness will endure.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien, The Return of The King
Hopefully you now have a fuller appreciation of J.R.R. Tolkien, and the beautiful words of his books. Stay tuned for a post on the thousands of incredible C.S. Lewis quotes!
